Your Guide to a Smooth First-Time Trip to Disneyland California.
If you’re planning a trip to Disneyland or Disneyworld, whether it’s your first time or you’re revisiting the magic, there are some crucial things you need to know or may have walked right by on previous visits. From what to pack to navigating the parks, this guide will help you make the most of your Disney experience.
Reliving Childhood Memories and Creating New Ones
I have vague but joy sparking memories of visiting Disneyland and Disneyworld as a child. I recall meeting Minnie Mouse, wearing a leash, feeling the sting of those 4D movie chairs, and the thrill of Tower of Terror. Fast forward to when I turned 30, I found myself in San Diego, my favorite place, celebrating my birthday. The night before, on a whim, I decided I desperately wanted to go to Disneyland. The parks had changed since my last visit as a kid, and I wanted to ring in this new decade with a fun, nostalgic experience.
It was 2021, and getting tickets wasn’t as straightforward due to new rules and crowd control measures. Getting ticket that soon to the date, they of course were sold out (which is still super common week of!) I spent the night refreshing the app every few min trying to find someone who had rescheduled their tickets, and around 1 AM, I finally managed to secure tickets for my mom, my baby (who didn’t need a ticket), and myself.
Re-experiencing the joys of Disneyland, I quickly became charmed. Over the next two years, I took my daughter to Disneyland five times. I vividly remember standing on Main Street, near tears as I watched my daughter dance in her Elsa dress during a parade. It was one of the few places where I felt true endorphin rushes—a pricey addiction, indeed!
Lessons Learned from My Disneyland Adventures
1. Disneyland is Packed During Holidays and School Breaks Plan your visit during off-peak times to avoid the massive crowds.
2. Genie+ and Lightning Lane are Lifesavers These tools can significantly cut down your wait times for popular attractions.
3. Use the Disneyland App for Food Orders Order food through the app to avoid long waits at dining locations. A seemingly short line can quickly turn into a 45-minute ordeal.
4. Bring Multiple Pairs of Shoes Give your feet a break by switching shoes throughout the day to avoid blisters.
5. Pack Remedies for Heel Cracks Walking all day can take a toll on your feet, so come prepared with foot care essentials.
6. Invest in a Photo Pass Having professional photos taken at iconic spots is worth it. You get high-quality pictures without the hassle of asking strangers to take your photo.
7. Everything Has a Line From security checks to character meet-and-greets, expect to wait. Being prepared can make your experience more enjoyable.
8. Go Multiple Days The lines can get quite defeating, but the best way to enjoy Disneyland California is to go 2-4 days and then you are sure to get to do everything from meeting princesses, watching fireworks, and enjoying your favorite rides a few times.
Navigating Disneyland: Patience and Preparation are Key
Every aspect of Disneyland involves a line. Upon arrival, you will enter through Downtown Disney. Security is your first checkpoint, whether you arrive by tram or on foot. Security checks can be lengthy during peak hours, so patience is essential. To speed up the process, have your belongings in a separate, easy-to-access bag. Remember, you can bring snacks and drinks (no alcohol), but they need to be readily accessible.
No Stroller Wagons Allowed
A critical tip: stroller wagons are banned in Disneyland. Make sure you have an approved stroller or be prepared to rent one from the park to avoid disappointment. Now while you are in the parks you may see other people with them, check the website if you bringing a medically needed child, there are a few cases with exceptions. Here’s also a guide to the dimensions the stroller must fit. If your stroller doesn’t fit in this box, you will be sent away to return back on foot. End of story. Next.
Entering the Park: The Magic Begins
After clearing security, you’ll enter Downtown Disneyland with beautiful shops, restaurants, foutains, and the entrance to both Disney CA Adventure and Disneyland. The atmosphere is absolutely magical, with themed music, warm air, and an overwhelming sense of excitement. But before you can enjoy the parks, there’s another line to have your tickets scanned, which can take up to an hour during peak times. Ensure you have your tickets and the Disneyland app ready to go to avoid additional wait times at the ticket booth. They will take a picture of everyone with a ticket and then it’s off to the most magical day ever!
In the Park: Making the Most of Your Day
Once inside, the Disneyland app becomes your best friend. It’s your go-to for checking wait times, making dining reservations, and finding characters. Main Street is your first stop, where you’ll find beloved characters like Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and more. Each character has a line for photos, managed by a cast member. They rotate frequently, so if you miss one, another will soon appear. You may by now (like I was) already feel completely discouraged with lines. You just took about an hour to get into the park and now 30+ people long just to get a picture in mainstreet or with the characters?? This is why i recommend 2-4 days, the first day I head straight to the rides, but if you have a few days you’ll have time to wait in line and get your pictures when you see your favorite characters walking around the parks.
Capturing the Magic: Iconic Photo Opportunities
Main Street offers amazing photo opportunities with a picturesque backdrop. There’s usually a line, but having a photo pass allows you to have staff take professional pictures, which you can download to your phone via the Disneyland app. It’s a worthwhile investment for capturing those memorable moments without relying on selfies or the kindness of strangers. Or in my case, going alone w my daughter I wanted to be in the memories also. Well worth the money in my opinion.
Celebrating Special Occasions at Disneyland
If you’re celebrating a birthday or a first visit, stop by any souvenir shop to get a special badge. With a “Happy Birthday” or “First Visit” pin, cast members will make your day extra special with greetings and sometimes even front-of-line privileges. It’s an incredible way to celebrate and adds to the magic of your Disneyland experience.
Planning Your Day: Rides and Attractions
Decide on your must-see attractions and plan your day accordingly. For a more structured experience, consider using the Genie+ feature to schedule ride times. There are plenty of online resources and Facebook groups that can provide detailed advice on how to maximize your use of Genie+ and Lightning Lane.
Essential Tips for Using the Disneyland App
- Your Ticket: The app serves as your digital ticket.
- Purchase Genie+: Buy Genie+ through the app for ride scheduling.
- Reservations: High-demand restaurants and experiences like Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique book up 60 days out, so plan ahead.
- Entertainment and Characters: Use the app to find shows and locate where characters are in live time at the park.
- Find Fuel Stations: Locate charging stations for your devices to stay connected throughout the day.
Here’s an optimized and engaging version of the second half of your Disneyland California guide for first-time visitors:
Don’t Forget a Portable Charger!
Bringing a portable charger is essential. Disneyland doesn’t have many outlets, but they do have amazing vending machines with FuelRods. These are a one-time purchase and can be swapped for free, indefinitely. I recommend buying them at the park as they come fully charged; many Amazon reviews mention that they arrive uncharged. Use the Disneyland app to find FuelRod stations by filtering “Guest Services” and looking for the battery icon or sorting by “List.” These chargers are fantastic, equipped with adapters for both iPhone and Android devices, and can easily hang off your phone while charging.

The Disneyland App: Your Best Friend
The Disneyland app is invaluable for a smooth experience. When using the map, you can filter by:
- Entertainment (with schedules)
- Characters (real-time locations)
- Food and Mobile Ordering
- Guest Services
- And more!

Bring Your Own Snacks and Water
Pack refillable water bottles and snacks. They are lifesavers in long lines and can help avoid meltdowns when hunger strikes. Plus, it saves money for meals and souvenirs. I found food lines to be quite long, often taking 45 minutes even with only 8-12 people. Always use the mobile app to order food. Check menus and place your order while waiting in line for a ride, so your food is ready by the time you arrive.
Special Tips for Gluten-Free Visitors
If you’re gluten-free, Disneyland has you covered. Use the Find Me Gluten Free app for reviews and pre-visit research. Most places will provide an allergy-friendly menu if you ask. The app allows you to filter by allergens, making it easier to find safe dining options.

Must-See Entertainment
Don’t miss the parade and fireworks! For families with young kids, these are highlights. Staff start roping off areas for the parade early, so plan ahead and check the app for times. The Disneyland 100 fireworks are spectacular, with projections on the castle and a touching display that brings movie clips to life. Another show, featuring fireworks from Tom Sawyer Island, offers a unique experience. Prime viewing spots fill up hours in advance, so arrive early.
Leaving the Park: Pros and Cons
With young children (1-3 years old), I opted to stay in the park to avoid the hassle of re-entering. Bringing a stroller and a baby carrier was a game-changer for naps and waiting in lines. Re-entry is allowed, so it’s up to you and your family’s needs. Many people, especially those staying on-site, leave and return later.
Stroller Tips: Avoiding Stress
Stroller movement can be a hassle at Disneyland. Strollers aren’t allowed in ride lines, and staff often relocate them during parades. My stroller was moved multiple times, sometimes quite far from where I parked it. My top tip: AirTag your stroller. After a few frustrating experiences, I started using AirTags, and it saved me time and stress. I also recommend AirTagging toddlers to avoid losing them in the crowd.

Hidden Stroller Tip
For those bringing strollers with tires, there’s an air pump near the stroller rental by the Disneyland entrance. Just ask for it; it saved me when I had a flat tire. Here’s a picture for reference—you wouldn’t know it’s there otherwise!

Disney Visa Tips
If you’re using a Disney Visa, be aware that points can’t be spent directly. You need to order a preloaded card. I learned this the hard way at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. You can get a card on-site at City Hall, but expect a long wait. Order your card before your trip to avoid delays.
Wrapping Up Your First Visit
For a first-time visit, these basics should set you up for a fantastic experience. Disneyland can be very hot and overcrowded, especially in summer, but it truly lives up to its reputation as the HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH.
